Source: fyqueerlatinxsIt makes more sense for us to be part of an ethnicity than for us to be considered a single race.
Although Latin@ as an ethnicity is somewhat problematic (since there is no monolithic “Latin@ culture”), it speaks more to the fact that Latin@s come from all sorts of racial backgrounds.
There are black Latin@s (Celia Cruz), Asian Latin@s (Ana Gabriel), indigenous Latin@s (Rigoberta Menchú), White Latin@s (Elena Poniatowska), Arab Latin@s (Shakira), etc.
Calling ourselves members of one race not only erases our true diversity, but also allows a complete dismissal of racism in our community (because yes, we are racist among our own).
